Going green by sterilization
I ran across this article this morning, and decided to share it with the childfree masses. It interviews two childfree couples who have decided to forego children in order to live a more green and environmentally friendly life. This is one of the many common reasons that people decide to be childfree.
Of course, this article resulted people, once again, lumping the Childfree into the same category as a psycho killer. There were several comments that really irked me:
Has this woman seen a psychiatrist? Human life is much more precious than the planet! ((Sure it is! Who needs a planet to live on anyway? Minor detail…))
Speechless. Misguided in the extreme. Hey while you are at it why don’t you have a female circumcision too? ((Um…what?))
These people should get a life! ((We have a fabulous one without kids…thanks for the thought though!))
What a pair of plonkers! Still, the world will be a better place without any clones of them in it, so we have to be grateful for that. ((FYI…being childfree is not a genetic mutation. The more children YOU have, the greater the odds that one of them will be childfree. Ahh…the irony.))
Thanks (sic) God these fools won’t pass on the breathtaking stupidity contained in their genetic profile.((See above.))
How bizarre to say babies ‘pollute the planet’! Surely by this logic you ought to commit suicide for the benefit of the planet. ((Absolutely! You go first. Dumb@ss…))
It is very sad that Toni had an abortion on such a pretext. I wonder if she ever thinks about how old her child would be now. Does her child (now in heaven) appreciate being sacrificed to the eco-Gods? What is more natural than a mother’s love for a child? (What is more natural?? Explain the millions of abused, neglected and unwanted children. How is that more natural than the planet we live on?))
I really think it’s great – less nuts about to breed and spread their lunacy to children. ((Haven’t we addressed this before?))
While I’m not a hardcore Green activist (I definitely do what I can though), I can understand that this is a very respectable and logical reason for not wanting to have children and I say kudos to them for standing firm on their beliefs. That said, the comments above are the reason that the childfree community is so close knit. We’ve bonded together because of the ridiculous bingos that we get in our day to day life. If everyone accepted our decision and never said a word about it, then I seriously doubt we’d be having these discussions at all. However, I have a feeling that day is a long way off, if ever.

Thanks for finding this article. Funny how people have the same head in the sand attitude when it comes to green issues… “oh yes we want to save the planet, but not if it means having no or less kids…we’ll have the kids – and teach ‘em to recycle – that’ll save the planet” Duh! Denial, mixed up or what?

Breeders will always try to rationalize having kids even if they know what they’re saying doesn’t make sense. They are always trying to verify their decisions to themselves.

Someone once told me that I was “going against Nature” because I don’t want to have kids. I told him that I have NO maternal instinct or desire for children, so in reality, I would be going against Nature if I DID have kids! Saying you must have kids just because you have the “equipment” (eg, reproductive organs) is like saying “you have opposable thumbs, so you must become an electrician.” No, there needs to be desire there, and perhaps some talent for it as well. And I have neither the desire nor talent for raising kids.

I tried to post a comment congratulating those women and praising their strength of conviction. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it didn’t stay up.
